Instead of heading straight to Salzburg we elected to head a little further north to Mondsee town and lake of the same name. We had a bit of a hill to get over and then a 110m drop down to Mondsee (Lake Moon?). The beautiful scenery goes on and on….

Sept. 19th: Hallstatt to St.Gilgen – 55km, 410km climbed
I did some washing yesterday evening and, after tilting windows open, hung it all on the curtain rails behind the curtains to dry. Worked nicely except for the wool shirt that I had to put on while still damp. The landlady suggested, at checkout, that we ride around the end…
Sept. 18th: Golling to Hallstatt – 52km, 702m climbed
We had some work ahead of us today so we called in at a Spar for rolls, ham, cheese slices and bananas before heading out. The first couple of kilometers were uphill and against a very strong wind which was a bit worrying but luckily the wind all but disappeared…
Sept. 17th: Spittal to Golling – 22km, 121m climbed
We were up, breakfasted, packed and on the road by 10. After a couple of pictures in town we rolled down to the station looking to get on the next train to Golling. That little plan did not go well. The ticket clerk could only offer us tickets for the…
Sept. 16th: Lienz to Spittal – 81km, 385m climbed
We were all agreed that the Grand was an excellent hotel and the sort of buffet breakfast that made you want to go back to bed and rest a while rather than get on a bike. Our original plan had been to ride to Mallnitz and take the train through…
Sept. 15th: Toblach to Lienz – 51km, 86m climbed
Today was a comfortable ride along the river Drau valley on a well paved bike route that goes much further east than we need. According to Wiki we have dropped 568m between the two towns and for much of the way we freewheeled at the side of a fast flowing…
Sept. 14th: Cortina to Toblach – 32km, 340m climbed
Today was a short stage so there was no rush. The first job was to take two pictures of the same scenes as yesterday. The rain (there was lots of it when we walked back from the restaurant in town last night) cleared the air for a much better view…
Sept. 13th: Cortina Day 2
It was planned to take a ride up one of the passes today but the weather forecast was for possible thunderstorms and certain rain so we took a ride out of town looking for a sports shop. Mark has convinced John that he should have a cap under his helmet…
Sept. 12th: First day in Cortina
There was no fixed plan for today so, after breakfast, we sat and discussed how to arrange the tour from here to Salzburg. It was all planned, but it has been decided to shorten some stages and spend more time to see a couple of towns. For the rest of…
Sept. 11th: Hotel Seehof to Cortina – 48km, 487m climbed
The weather was holding nicely. A clear blue sky and a great view over the lake. The washing was dry so we were soon packed and on our way after a leisurely breakfast. We had left the bike route to get to the hotel by road so had to continue…
