Mark arrived late last night after his VW bus broke down near Green River and had to get towed down to Moab. He eventually got it fixed and arrived at our motel just after I had gone to bed. He was still having trouble starting the vehicle this morning, so we didn’t get started on the ride until 1 o’clock. It was a tough 21km climb to the lake at 3220m and was so warm we ran out of drinks. We would never have made it without more drink so we stopped at a house and asked the people in the garden if they would fill our bottles with water. They were happy to oblige and we just had enough to get to the lake. We took the time for John to get his stove out and boil some water to make two tubs of noodles which put some energy back where it was sorely needed.  With breaks the ride up took three hours and the ride down took only half an hour.

We needed a bit of recovery time before we went out to eat and we didn’t have the energy to go far but fortunately there was a decent restaurant within a hundred yards. Tomorrow will be an early start because the climb over Berthoud pass goes quite a bit higher than today’s ride and rain is due about midday so we would like to be over the top before it starts,
