July 13th: Granby – Rocky Mtn NP – Granby 102km, 756m climbed

The tour plan for today was a ride to Trail Ridge Road in the Rocky Mountain National Park and we made it into the park but not as far as the planned destination. We had stopped many times to take photos and were behind schedule, so we set a limit of 1pm as the time to turn around. We had passed the Grand Lake Lodge shortly before the park and John wanted to return there for a break and an ice cream. Shortly after turning around, the rain started and, though it wasn’t continuous we got wet and very dirty riding on the hard shoulder where all the grit and dust collects. We reached the historic Grand Lake Lodge Est. 1910, at 2pm and found that there was no ice cream but the barman offered lemon or raspberry sorbet which proved to be a very nice substitute. After shooting more pictures, we set off on the final 30km through rain and distant thunderstorms and, back in Granby,  headed straight for the supermarket to get supper and lunch for tomorrow. Now, I’m sat here blogging while Mark and John are doing the laundry.

I don’t think they have spirit levels in America

We actually saw a moose, maximum zoom.

Fire ravaged forest from 2020.

If it isn’t fire it is bark beetle destroying the trees.

This was the state of our legs, socks and shoes when we arrived back. The bikes were and still are filthy and parked on the balcony.

Hi Tim, have been following your blog with interest. Have tried several times to find a way to comment but we’re away in the caravan and my phone won’t allow me to but have discovered this evening that Tina’s phone will. How odd. Anyway, love and best wishes for your birthday from both Tina and I. Spoke to Dave earlier today and he and Di also send their best wishes. Take care mate, it looks like you’re doing a lot, don’t over do it and now I know that I can I’ll post again soon. Orest & Tina x
