July 17th: Rest day in Glenwood Springs

Today was planned as a rest day and it was a good job too. We all felt the effect of yesterdays ride and didn’t make it down to breakfast much before 10. We are in the La Quinta motel which is more upmarket than anything we have used so far. There is a full range of cooked foods, fruits, cereals and drinks on offer so we made good use of it and were the last ones to leave the breakfast room. Mark and John went for a walk while I did the blog and fixed the punctured tube, tried to fix it that is. After the first patch it still slowly deflated so I put it back in the sink to find the next tiny hole. When that was patched I put it back in the sink for a final check and found that a small section of the tube very, very slowly created 5 tiny bubbles. This was definitely not from a puncture but a porous area that must have been there from new, so John will be getting a new one. The next problem arose when John came back and found that yesterday’s repaired back tyre was flat again so we had to take out the new tube and find the cause. Mark spent several minutes inspecting the tyre and eventually found another piece of wire in the tyre that had barely poked through but it was enough to pierce the tube. When that was patched the problem  was finally fixed. The next job was cleaning the bikes after having ridden on a dirt road in the rain and this is where the bathtub came in handy. John and I now have clean machines but not Mark, he’s on a dirty bike and will have to ride 100 yards behind us!
