July 19th Aspen: 6km, 43m climbed

As you can see from the numbers we have not done much cycling today. We did have a ride to see Maroon Bells on the plan, but that was just an option. We all decided to save our energy and leg muscles for tomorrow rather than make the 500m climb to MB.

We are in a three bed room with sink, cooker, microwave and fridge in the Tyrolean Lodge so this morning John and I were up and out the door before 7 to walk to the supermarket to buy the goods for breakfast and drinks for tomorrow. I think we overdid it a bit and had to stagger back 6 blocks carrying brown paper bags containing 8 litres of water, fruit juice, energy drinks, bars, eggs, bacon, butter, bread and jam. I think Maroon Bells might have been easier! I paid $75 and John said it would have cost half as much in Oshkosh.

Around lunchtime, we rolled around town looking at the various streets and buildings, stopped off for a burger and milkshake lunch, checked out a hotel for a trip John wants to make next March and then went to see the John Denver Sanctuary.

This town is definitely for the rich, way way out of my league. I’ll give you an example from the back page of the local paper. There are only five single family homes on Aspen mountain and one that has belonged to a family for decades has come on the market.

Over 14000 sq. ft. of living space, 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, football field size on and off ski access, 1.4 acres. Price $100 million!!

Oh, and in the shops, Prada, Gucci etc. there are no prices on the goods.

Garmisch St. looking at the SW side of Aspen.
The NE side. It is a narrow town.
Pedestrian zone.
I wish I could get our hanging baskets to look like this.
Sparrows running all around picking up the bits.
A local hero Olympian.
The gondola. The mountains behind that slope are over 13000ft.
A lot of bikes for rental and a lot of cyclists around town.
This business is owned by a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
John Denver Sanctuary.
One for Jean.
Bio water treatment of city run off prior to release into the Roaring Fork river.
Couldn’t avoid the shadows.
Some chrome art.
Interesting style, loose rocks in metal cages.

Hi all, following your blog with interest each day and enjoying the photos. Hope the weather’s kinder to you there than it is here as we reached 39.8 degrees locally. Take care.
