July 27th: Charles City – Oshkosh; 24km, 30m climbed

Today we still had several hours of driving ahead of us to get to John’s home in Oshkosh but we had ideas about including some points of interest. The first idea was to go for a bike ride along the side of the Mississippi river after crossing it into Wisconsin at Prairie du Chien but we could not find a suitable route for cycling so we abandoned that idea. The next destination was New Glarus which was originally settled by a number of Swiss immigrants in 1850. The photos show how very Swiss-German it still is. The real reason for going there had nothing to do with it’s origins but the fact that it had a brewery that produces the famous Spotted Cow beer that is only available in Wisconsin. Before we went to the brewery, we found a bike trail on an abandoned railway line so we rode from New Glarus to Monticello and back to work up an appetite. Back at the car, after loading the bikes and getting changed, we drove up a big hill to the brewery only to find it was closed due to reduced opening hours. We had no option but to go back into town for a beer and a bratwurst at Puempels Olde Tavern, founded in 1885, still with original bar woodwork and murals.

Once back in the car we set off on the final stage and, after a coffee/tea break at a drive-in coffee shop in Madison, the state capital, continued on to Oshkosh and arrived here at 9:15pm.

Normally, the pictures would be here ready for breakfast readers but I’ve left the camera in the car and can’t get to it at the moment. When I get up for breakfast I’ll load them up as soon as possible.

Mississippi river.
How New Glaris came about.
The old railway station and bike trailhead.

A rabbit for Philipp and Isabella.

The Ice Bike Trail estimated to be the southern limit of the ice age.
The Sugar River Trail, straight, flat and still lots of corn fields on both sides.
Back in New Glarus with the German named shops.
Hotel…

Uli,….
a very neat and tidy looking church,…

What a pity your time is drawing to a close. I would be quite happy to read blogs about your travels for another 2 or 3 weeks! Mind you, Jean might have something to say about that!!
    Have a good journey home.

We will be doing some rides around Oshkosh and then it will be time to start packing the bike away. I’m looking forward to getting back and hope to see you soon thereafter.
