July 28th: Oshkosh; 34km, 95m climbed

Today’s ride was a sightseeing tour around the outskirts of Oshkosh. It is flat around here and the 95m of climbing are the sum of all the bridges we cycled over. It must be as flat as Skegness and today was even windier.

We set off north for a few kilometers with Lake Winnebago on our right and then turned left into the wind and cycled west until we were on the other side of town. Ar the end of the road was the start of a bike trail back to town. There was also a micro-brewery called Bare Bones on the corner but we didn’t stop to see what it was like. It is on the to-do for Saturday though.

Heading south took us past Lake Butte des Morts on our right, where Jean and I took Tanja and Steven for a ride in a motorboat in 1987. They probably won’t remember it. After passing the lake we rode into town along the side of the Fox River and then across to the side of Lake Winnebago where John has his office. He had some work to do while I sat outside and watched fishing boats on the lake, trains go by and a variety of planes flying around from the annual EAA air show that is taking place this week.

With work out of the way we rode home through town and settled down for a barbeque evening with his daughter’s family and son-in-law Ben will be joining us for our final ride on Saturday.

Lake Winnebago.10 miles across and 30 miles long.
These were the quiet ones. Later, a modern fighter jet flew overhead and we had to stick our fingers in our ears and conversation stopped.
They ran off across the lawns of the Drug Abuse Correctional Centre as soon as I stopped to get my camera out.
This barn collapsed in 60 mph winds during last Saturday’s storm. Only the hay is holding the roof up.

Apartments on the Fox Riverfront.
Controversial bridge. The city council refuse to pay their share of the repair costs so one half has been raised to allow boats through and the road has been closed until ….nobody knows.
No idea what type but it was big.
After cars, bikes, boats and planes this train finished the list of major modes of transport and then the camera battery was flat.
