July 30th: Oshkosh – the last ride: 58km, 179m climbed

Today was the last chance for some exercise before setting off on what will be about twenty four hours of travelling. John and I left his place and rode through the northern part of town to collect his son-in-law, Ben, who lives close to Lake Butte des Morts on a very nice estate. It is enviable just how much house you can get for your money compared with, say, Kreis Mettmann.

We rode some quiet country lanes and trails on abandoned railway lines and came across the farm where John’s mother grew up and an aunt still lives. He has seven brothers so there are a lot of relatives scattered around Oshkosh. After heading back, we stopped in Winneconne for an ice cream and then took the bike trail from Vinland back towards Oshkosh. After 6km we turned a couple of corners to cross a road and, bless my little cotton socks, there was the Bare Bones brewery on the other side of the road. There was even a bicycle rack outside the door so we thought we should make use of it for an hour or so. We left before we completely lost our appetite for cycling and, after a short stop at Ben’s house, made it back to Oshkosh for an early dinner.

The last task of the day was to dismantle my bike and pack it in it’s case ready for an early start tomorrow.

Well, that’s it really. Thanks for following us and for the comments and I hope to be in touch with as many of you as possible over the next few days.
