July 8th: Duesseldorf – Chicago – Council Bluffs, Iowa

One of hundreds of wind turbines in the corn fields

Well, despite all the bad news in the media about travel disruption, my trip went well. The train from Duesseldorf was on time and arrived at Frankfurt airport only a few minutes behind schedule. Although LH ticket information said I could check-in my baggage at the rail/fly terminal, they took one look at my bike case and sent me off to oversize baggage check-in terminal B. That was a long walk but the queue there was a lot shorter than all the normal desks, so I was soon able to say goodbye bags hope to see you in Chicago and then head back to terminal A. The flight left more a less on time and 10 hours later we landed in Chicago about 15 minutes late. I have never made it as fast through U.S. immigration as I did today and was in the baggage hall before my bag and case came through. I am happy to report that both items arrived unscathed and 10 minutes later I was through customs and in the arrivals hall right in front of where John was standing only an hour after touchdown. It didn’t take long to load his van and then we were on our way heading for Council Bluffs in Iowa, 450 miles away. When we stopped for a break at the world’s biggest truck stop John booked a room at a motel in Council Bluffs where we arrived at 10:25pm, exactly 24 hours after I had left home, a long but successful travel day.
