July 9th: Council Bluffs, Iowa – Georgetown, Colorado (by car)

We only spent 81/2 hours in the room and after a quick drink for breakfast we set off to do the 600+ miles to Georgetown. We did a couple of hours before we stopped for breakfast and then tanked the car and got straight back on the interstate. After a lot more miles we pulled off for lunch and more petrol, which we did get at well over $5 a gallon (John has not recovered from that yet), but the rest of the location was so rough (the business on the other side of the road was derelict}, that we got straight back on the interstate. We eventually turned off for lunch after crossing from Nebraska into Colorado and stopped in (we can’t remember) but it did have a McDonalds. One remarkable difference between Iowa and Nebraska was after seeing hundreds of wind turbines along the interstate in Iowa there were none in Nebraska.

John explained that politics and utility companies cause these distorted approaches to renewables. The next few hours saw us cover the remaining miles and we arrived in Georgetown around 5pm (we had gained another hour after crossing into the Mountain Time zone) and, as we drove past Denver, we saw that the temperature outside was 103F which meant it would be around 80 in Georgetown. A bit warm for cycling up the passes we had in our plan.

After we had arrived and checked in at the Georgetown Lodge it was necessary to do some-

thing about the heat and we agreed that a brewery bar was a good place to start. We went for dinner in a different brewery bar/restaurant and after that there was one important job outstanding which was to unpack and build my bike before I collapsed into bed.
