July12th: Granby – Byers Canyon -Granby 50km, 286m climbed

Today we had a short easier tour planned to give ourselves a bit more recovery time for a big day tomorrow. We had done the shopping last night for breakfast so John got busy while I did yesterday’s blog. I suddenly had to break off because doing the toast didn’t quite go right and after much merriment (see photo) I was able to continue. In the spirit of good teamwork Mark and I did the washing up and then we all got ready and set off and rode to the start of the  canyon where we stopped to take a group picture. While I was setting up the camera on a small tripod on top of a crash barrier post, a train sounded it’s horn and six locomotives came into view pulling over a hundred tank wagons with two locomotives pushing at the rear. An impressive sight, if you like trains that is. Once the train had gone, I finished the group photo and then we rolled down the canyon road making frequent photo stops. When we reached the end, we turned round and rode back to Hot Sulphur Springs to a roadside cafe that John had spotted where we were able to sit in the shade each with a 20oz shake. As much as we would have like to stay, we set off as the clouds were building up and we caught the start of a thunderstorm as we reached the supermarket near our condo. We stocked up on bananas for our ride to Trail Ridge Road in the  Rocky Mountain National Park tomorrow and plan to make an early start for what will be a long hard ride.

The first batch of toast
6 locomitives followed by a mile of train
The tank wagons kept on coming
….while I finished the group photo
Then we saw the two engines needed to push the train
…round the tight bends.
Colorado river near Granby
…where it enters the reservoir.
