The weather was holding nicely. A clear blue sky and a great view over the lake.

The washing was dry so we were soon packed and on our way after a leisurely breakfast. We had left the bike route to get to the hotel by road so had to continue on the same road to the first town, Welsberg. We stopped in the centre of town for the supermarket then decided to stop at the bakery for a coffee and pastry before continuing on to Toblach. We thought we were already in Toblach at our next stop but were actually a bit short in Niederdorf but it was worth looking at to take a couple of pictures before pushing on to the centre of Toblach where we sat in the square for lunch.

They do like their flowers on the balconies.

Looking due south and somewhere through those mountains is our gravel trail to Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Toblach lake. Too cold for swimming in so we didn’t stop.

This first world war gravesite has, over the years, become neglected and restored more than once. Efforts were made by the relevant international organisations to repatriate the remains of German, Austrian and Italian soldiers but there are still over 1200 casualties from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia and others buried here.

The trail from Toblach climbs for 17km to Cimebanche pass and all along the route there are places to stop for refreshments or scenic photos. This is a shot of the Drei Zinnen, famous for numerous rock climbing feats.photos

We didn’t have time to stop here today but we have to travel this route back on Thursday and this place is on the agenda for a second breakfast.

After topping the pass the trail along the old railway line became rougher but still had some of the old buildings standing as well as 3 tunnels for us to ride through.

We finally made it to our hotel which, despite it’s size, currently has no restaurant operating so we had to walk into town.

Mark and John shuffling off to the outdoor bar where we sat talking to a couple from Finland. John did most of the talking because he has worked in Finland a lot and reckons it is the best country in the world to move to. When it got dark and cold the three of us moved to a restaurant where we had to wait for a table. John ordered Campari and orange for himself and one for Mark because he wanted to try it out on him. I refused because I found out 50 years ago that it is horrible.

We weren’t convinced. After a 3 course Italian meal, I think there was some wine involved, we wandered back to the hotel and here is the last picture of the day.
