Sept. 14th: Cortina to Toblach – 32km, 340m climbed

Today was a short stage so there was no rush. The first job was to take two pictures of the same scenes as yesterday. The rain (there was lots of it when we walked back from the restaurant in town last night) cleared the air for a much better view although there was still some low cloud.

Yesterday…………

Today. Weather was mixed with cloud, some rain and some sunshine but when it rained it got cold so we had to stop and put some extra kit on and, of course, that meant even more stuff was dirty from the wet gravel trail. We had quite a clean up job to do when we checked in.

We have just got out of town onto the ……..

gravel trail. Around 28km, 13 uphill with 3 tunnels and the rest a gentle downhill.

We had just crossed this gorge over the old railway bridge where the sides were all covered so the best position for a picture was not available.

Plenty of people on the trail. I did wonder if they had stopped to admire……..

the precision with which this pile of wood had been erected. All three of us wondered how the wall had been set up so smoothly. Not much further on we reached the top of the pass and stopped for a break. John set up his cooker and boiled the water for 3 lots of pot noodles. There were plenty of people about including a group from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. John and Mark were occupied talking to that group while I was talking to a group of young lads on their way to Venice. I was carrying a weighty bike guide for Munich-Venice and gave it to them. I was happy to lighten the load on my bike and save myself the trouble of putting it on ebay years from now when I would have finally decided that it would never be used.

There was so much activity where we stood that the cows came over and lined up to have their picture taken.

After our break we rolled downhill in the rain until we took a break at Toblach lake, dull to start with but we did end up with some sunshine to warm us up.

A round of Apfelstrudel and vanilla ice cream helped. The strudel had been made with a shortcrust pastry and was the best I have ever eaten. From there it was only a couple of kilometers to our room at the Rosengarten hotel where we have the suite with very large bathrooms and an equally large jacuzzi on the balcony.

And the view from thd jacuzzi is not bad either.
