Sept. 15th: Toblach to Lienz – 51km, 86m climbed

Today was a comfortable ride along the river Drau valley on a well paved bike route that goes much further east than we need. According to Wiki we have dropped 568m between the two towns and for much of the way we freewheeled at the side of a fast flowing river. To leave Toblach we rode from the hotel back into town to pick up the bike route and avoid the heavily trafficed main rode. No sooner were we on the bike trail l than we had to stop to look at the Grand hotel that was built by a railway pioneer.

After a few kilometers we walked the bikes through the pedestrian zone in Innichen.

Not something we would want to peddle up the Brenner pass or any pass for that matter.

and goodbye Italy.

A memorial to the people killed in the flood disaster in the sixties after 10 inches of rain in 48 hours.

Time for a pot noodle lunch and then back on the bikes. We made good progress and soon found the nice little hotel that we had managed to book last night in Toblach.

Inside didn’t look too bad ……

and after a meal in town a nightcap in the hotel bar.
