Sept. 16th: Lienz to Spittal – 81km, 385m climbed

We were all agreed that the Grand was an excellent hotel and the sort of buffet breakfast that made you want to go back to bed and rest a while rather than get on a bike. Our original plan had been to ride to Mallnitz and take the train through the Tauern tunnel tomorrow but instead we are riding to Spittal and taking the train tomorrow to Golling to recover the day spent doing shorter stages to see the towns. Before leaving town we road to the confluence of the Isel and Drau rivers. The interesting aspect of this confluence is the speed and violence with which the smaller Drau runs into the quieter and almost three times larger Isel and yet continues as the Drau.

Here is the Drau crashing over the rocks into a relatively placed Isel. I did a short video to capture the noise but I can’t load it to the blog. You’ll have to come round for tea to watch it.

Heavy skies around us but it stayed fine and the sun fought its way through later.

There was not a lot of variation in the scenery to warrant a lot of pictures but the mountains were getting lower and the corn higher.

We have checked in at the Erlebnis Post hotel in Spittal and it is rather different, especially compared to the Grand in Lienz.
