Sept. 17th: Spittal to Golling – 22km, 121m climbed

We were up, breakfasted, packed and on the road by 10. After a couple of pictures in town we rolled down to the station looking to get on the next train to Golling. That little plan did not go well. The ticket clerk could only offer us tickets for the 19:40 train because all earlier trains had no space for bikes. We wuz a bit stunned and after some deliberation rode back to the hotel to park our bikes and think about what we wanted to do. For €10 we were able to hand over a load of kit for washing and drying while we went round the corner to a bakers and waited there until the dryer finished. The receptionist recommended using the time to ride out of town to Millstaettersee which we did and rode around the lake to Millstatt for a late lunch. The ride back to town was downhill so that didn’t take long and, after a Gelato, it was still only 17:30 and all we could do was move on to the station and wait for the train. In the meantime, Mark and John have gone up the road to a Mexican restaurant while I guard the bikes and blog away. If the train is on time we should arrive in Golling just after 21:30 and get to the hotel before they lock the doors at 22:00.
