Sept. 18th: Golling to Hallstatt – 52km, 702m climbed

We had some work ahead of us today so we called in at a Spar for rolls, ham, cheese slices and bananas before heading out. The first couple of kilometers were uphill and against a very strong wind which was a bit worrying but luckily the wind all but disappeared once we got between the mountains. The landscape was more dramatic than we have seen the last couple of days and some of the mountains looked as though they had been shot through the earth’s crust.

We stopped in Abdenau and made up our bread rolls with the ham and cheese and enjoyed a short break before tackling the 10km climb that was waiting for us.

They do like their flowers in these towns and there are lots more to come. We left Abdenau and set off and tackled the first climb which, after reaching the top, dropped us 100m into the valley only to have to climb back out again until we reach Gschuett pass.

From here it was a non-stop descent until we turned off down the side of Hallstatt lake.

We stopped at the side of a narrow road to take this picture and did not make ourselves popular with a tour bus driver who had to deviate slightly to pass us.

The road through town was for peds and cyclists only. Bus loads of tourists, predominantly Asian, filled the streets using their selfie sticks to take pictures in front of flower coated balconies.

That is about as far back as the houses went.
