I did some washing yesterday evening and, after tilting windows open, hung it all on the curtain rails behind the curtains to dry. Worked nicely except for the wool shirt that I had to put on while still damp. The landlady suggested, at checkout, that we ride around the end of the lake and up the east side rather than the way we rode into town. It turned out to be a rough gravel trail and ten kilometers further than the planned route. Was it worth it? Don’t know……..

…..but at least we got to see Hallstatt from the other side and found that there is a railway line operating on that side with a station where you get off to take the boat across the lake to Hallstatt.

At one point the gravel path became a series of angle iron triangles bolted onto the rock above the edge of the lake with rubber mats to ride on.

And on we went. Suddenly, we came across this unusual house shortly before Bad Ischl, Villa Blumenthal. Wiki can tell you all about it.

This is looking back but the town is low down and at this point we have just done a wicked 15% climb which we only managed by slaloming our way up.
