Sept. 4th &5th Wuelfrath: The Next Tour is About to Begin

It is the same trio as last year but this time in Europe. I will travel to Munich tomorrow and will be joined on Wednesday morning by John and Mark from Wisconsin and Idaho respectively. We will spend the day at a hotel in Hallbergmoos and use the time there for John and Mark to unpack and rebuild their bikes and get them loaded ready for an early start on Thursday morning. We do not want to deal with cycling all the way through Munich so will take the S-Bahn across town to Sauerlach and start our ride there. The first stage takes us to Jenbach in Austria and then, via Innsbruck, over the Brenner pass to Brixen, Toblach and Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites. After four nights in Cortina and three days looking around we set off for the lakes east of Salzburg via Toblach, Lienz, Mallnitz, Bad Gastein and Goelling an der Salzach. We plan to stay in Hallstatt on Lake Hallstatt and St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang before starting back for the last day on the bikes to Freilassing via Lake Fuschl. From Freilassing, we will take trains back to Hallbergmoos where John and Mark will retrieve there bike cases and then move into Munich city centre while I travel home. They will have three days to visit the Oktoberfest and use their Deutschlandkarte to visit Garmisch and Ulm.

One bike ready to roll:

and one rider on his way.

The ICE, despite being late arriving at various stations, actually got me to M-Pasing on time for my connection to Hallbergmoos near the airport. In February I had booked a valet service to pick Mark and John up at the airport and to store their bike cases during the tour, so my first job, after checking in at the hotel, was to go to the valet service office and check that the arrangement still stood. There were lots of parked cars and open buildings but nobody answered at the office nor did anybody answer the phone. I left a message for somebody to call me back but nobody ever did. I am now an expert in the use of S-Bahn and buses between Munich airport and Hallbermoos Alter Wirt hotel.

Once I had the info that I needed for the next day, I went into town to meet with someone that Tanja and I met on our Danube tour in June called Daniel. He took me to a large, well known beer garden, the name of which escapes me. Probably due to the number of beers we tried. He did at least get me back to the station in time for the train to Hallbergmoos and bus to the hotel.
