Sept. 7th: Hallbergmoos to Jenbach, Austria – 98km, 818m climbed

We were packed and ready to roll by about 10. The plan was to take the S-Bahn across Munich to Sauerlach, thus avoiding the city, and ride from there to Jenbach. We called in at Rewe for bananas and made it to the station in time for our train. Twenty minutes later, one stop short of Munich-East where we needed to change, the train stopped, as did most of Munich’s S-Bahn, because a power line had come down at Laim station. Everybody on a 12 carriage train had to get off. Most people had gone while we stood around wondering what to do, so I went to speak to the train driver who, before I said anything, said the train would be moved forward to Munich-East. I had to stick my bike in the doors to stop them closing while John and Mark rushed over to get back on. We actually made our connection to Sauerlach and left the chaos behind. Apparently, it made the news.

Well, after all that excitement, the rest of the day was a bit tame. We followed the sat nav zig-zagging our way south under a blazing sun. We climbed over two passes, cycled all the way along the shore of Achensee and rocketed down the big hill towards Jenbach. There was no sign on the main road for Jenbach and we went too far down the mountain and had to go back 3km to the hotel. We were late and exhausted and, to cap it all, the hotel, despite what was on the internet, had no restaurant. After showering and changing we had to traipse down a steep hill, passing two closed restaurants before we found a pizzeria that was open. There was no way I was going to walk back so we had the waiter call a taxi for us for the 800m ride (remember it was uphill all the way back).

Tegernsee where we stopped for lunch and used John’s stove to boil the water for our Ramen noodles. (Hope you know what they are).

Achensee. While the lake is flat the shoreline isn’t so we had plenty of hills to contend with.

Sounds like a lot of excitement so far . We went to the Achensee last year when we were on holiday in Austria so I know how hilly it is around there . Hope you have good day today. Love, Tanja
