Sept. 8th: Jenbach to Steinach am Brenner – 44km, 122m climbed

There don’t seem to be enough hours in the day to ride, translate for two visitors all day and sort photos etc.

This stage was an easy ride up the Inn valley to Innsbruck. The ride up the Brenner pass is not considered to be good for cyclists due to heavy traffic. Normally the route would bypass Innsbruck through Patsch etc but we decided to go into Innsbruck because Mark had never been there. We spent the afternoon on lunch and looking around the centre of town. Mark and John finished off by tracking down a Schnapps shop and buying three bottles of mixed fruit schnapps to take home so I won’t be getting any. By the time we had finished in town it was late afternoon so we took a twenty minute train ride to Steinach am Brenner and rode the last couple of kilometres to the hotel. Now that, of course, sounds very easy but when I booked the hotel I had not seen the contour lines between the station and the hotel. After we had cycled the level high street we turned off for the final stretch to be confronted by what appeared to be an asphalt wall. Four hundred metres of 15-22%. It was not only impossible to ride but very difficult to push the bikes up wearing cycling shoes. (the steel cleats tend to slip). The result of this final exercise was our inability to consider going into town for dinner so we ate in.

The Inn with an unusual amount of water for this time of year.

I think this is a very impressive bridge for cyclists to get across the Inn.

Innsbruck, light on traffic in town but heavy on tourists.
