Sept. 9th: Steinach to Brixen – 70km 651m climbed.

The road up yesterday was so steep that John walked down it so Mark and I gave him a head start before we rolled down. The first stop was at the supermarket for bananas and pot noodles and then we set off on the 10km climb to the top of the Brenner pass. I’ve driven the motorway several times but all you get to see are lanes of heavy traffic. It was much more impressive from the road below. A masterpiece of civil engineering. It got pretty steep for the last few kilometers but we eventually crawled our way to the top and through the old customs post which is now an outlet centre. On the Austrian side we had had to use the road, shared with a lot of traffic, but once we were on the Italian side we were on a tarmaced bike trail that looked as though it had once been a railway line. Miles and miles on a nice gentle grade downhill until we stopped for lunch. Not much later the bike route went „scenic“ which means it went off up the mountain side and through remote villages.

Ideal bike route. If only they were all like it.

We eventually dropped down there and then we were off the old railway and on the hillier route.

Sterzing. Good for an ice cream break.

In the town square in Brixen where we have an appartment in an old monastery for one night. Tomorrow we head back north for about 8km and then east up the Pusteria valley to a hotel on a lake

Hi all, following your progress each day. Scenery reminds me of an old school trip to Austria many years ago. Hope the weather’s not as hot there as it’s been here. Take care.

Iconic scenery from the Alps of which you are getting a close-up and personal view. Enjoy and be safe.
