September 8th: Georgetown, then Georgetown to Denver by car

Today, we had plenty of time for a slow start. Our flight from Denver to London doesn’t leave until 19:35. After breakfast we dismantled the bikes i.e. remove luggage rack, pedals, wheels, rear derailleur and handlebar/stem and pack them in the Evoc bike bags and then set about squeezing everything else into a large nylon bag. We managed to keep all three just below the 23kg limit. The BA check-in clerk was impressed. Once the car was loaded, we checked out just before the 11am deadline and went to the visitor center to find something to do for a couple of hours. We decided to take a look at the Georgetown Loop Railroad which was built in the 19th century to serve the mining, particularly silver, industry. Although no longer in use for mining, the track, viaduct, rolling stock and steam locomotives have been restored and are operated for tourism. Judging by the hundreds of people there today it is obviously a very popular attraction. I should also mention, there were several gun-toting, whip-cracking cowboys at the station adding to the wild west atmosphere. We were glad that we had taken the time to go there and would have liked to stay longer but we still had a 70 mile drive to the airport and rental return etc.

In the meantime we are in the departures area waiting for the flight to be called. When we are back we will blog a short closing report…..

Nachdem wir heute Morgen unsere Fahrräder wieder in den Transporttaschen und auch alles andere ordentlich verstaut hatten, hatten wir noch ein bisschen Zeit, bevor wir uns auf den Weg zum Flughafen machen mussten. Wir hatten schon bei der Ankunft in Georgetown etwas abseits des Highways eine alte Dampflok stehen sehen, die offenbar in Betrieb war. Also fuhren wir rüber zum Visitor Center und fanden dort eine Broschüre über die Georgetown Loop Railroad, die Teil der ehemaligen Silbermineneisenbahn ist. Das klang interessant, daher fuhren wir direkt dorthin. Dort angekommen, fanden wir Einiges an Unterhaltung vor. Neben der Dampflok mit ihren diversen Waggons, die zwischen dem Highway und den Bergen verkehrte, gab es auch diverse verkleidete Leute, die einem das Gefühl gaben, in das 19. Jahrhundert einzutauchen. Zudem gab es einen Souvenirladen und Livemusik. Alleine der Dampflok beim Ein- und Ausfahren zuzugucken, war aber schon ein Highlight. Wir wären gerne mitgefahren, aber aus Zeitgründen haben wir uns dagegen entschieden. Sollte ich jemals wieder nach Georgetown kommen, hole ich das auf jeden Fall nach! Die Fotos in diesem Beitrag sind alle von der Loop Railroad und der dazugehörigen Umgebung. Mittlerweile sind wir in Denver am Flughafen angekommen und warten auf unseren Rückflug…

    Well, well done to the two of you. Sounds like you have had a really good time and overall did quite well with the weather considering. Loved the photos, must try to see them „in the flesh“ sometime. Got a couple of friends who will be interested in the pictures of the railway. Great to be able to follow your progress in a beautiful part of the world. Makes us think it would be nice to visit sometime, although I think my days of doing 11% climbs are probably over, especially on my old bike.
